* How did the term "Black Friday" change from describing a financial crisis (the gold market crash in 1869) to a day that's all about shopping? The answer is both complicated and disputed. The story most people know that it's the first day that retailers move their annual balance sheets from the red to the black is largely apocryphal. The truth (as best we know) is that it got its name in the 1950s from chaos in Philadelphia the day before the annual Army-Navy football game. In the 1980s, merchants uses big holiday sales to change the meaning from negative to positive. And the rest, as they say, is history.
